Often people ask me who I've worked for and with during my career. One of my most beloved program directors was Gilbert Blassingame, Jr. Some broadcasters may know him as Buddy Blake. He owned a publication called "Programmer's Digest" and the magazine showcased air talents and airchecks, as well a program directors of the era and their programming philosophies. He later went to work in the music business with Shelby Singleton in Nashville. He had worked for Gordon McLindon and was widely recognized as a world class programmer in his day, and he worked with me at WCAW in Charleston, West Virginia when it was the premier rock station of the mid to late 1960's. So Buddy Blake is in my personal hall of fame and I acknowledge him here and now.
While at WCAW I worked with several great air talents. Randy Scott was a legendary talent, Mike Hammer was smooth as they come! Jim Stanley was one of my program directors there and Roger Galloway was an amazing news man as was Bob Casto. Chuck McDowell and Little Jim Little were amazing people and became good friends. Some of these guys had worked at KLIF and KILT in Dallas and other legendary big market giant stations and they were so willing to coach me, share with me, their coaching, comments, and their concern for my career.
Bob Horton, Rod O'Dell, Tom Martin, Phil Vogel, Bob Miller and Jack Slygh are always in my memory from my days at WWNR in Beckley, West Virginia, where I fell in love with radio all were mentors and teachers. I will be adding to this list as days roll on but I wanted to say thanks to those that meant so much to my life and my career.., and honor them.
My life with mentor and friend, Randy Jay Dailey spans some thirty years. I was morning talent at WPAR when he was General manager there and I joined him at WADC and WIBZ-FM after a successful run as morning talent at WVAM in Altoona, Pennsylvanie, The Big V it was called and a monster rock station. I returned to the Parkersburg market as morning talent at WKYG and then joined The Dailey Corporation as morning talent, and later operations manager and then General manager with experience at the ad agency, and regional voice over talent for Nissan. Randy is a huge part of my life and career.
I left the company in 1978 to become Operations Manager at WCHS and WBES in Charleston and I hired Mike McVay as program director from WKWK and WNEU in Wheeling. I was doing an afternoon show on WCHS so I handed it off to Mike and said, "It's your baby"...so half the day I was his boss, half the day he was my boss. I never had a cross word with Mike, ever. He is the premier consultant, multi-national, and now SRVP Cumulus and doing well!
And now, "Here's Johnny!" I rejoined my very old friend, Johnny Wharff four years ago to do mornings at one of America's great radio stations. A VERY good soft Adult Contemporary station. Johnny brightens my day with a smile every broadcast day. He IS the smartest, most aware, national expert on branding and sales, I have ever met. It is my absolute joy to be working with and for Johnny at his flagship station with some great talented broadcasters.
I have to mention John Potts here. John was a supreme big voiced talent, as good as they come. A great coach!
