There are some on air talents that are so scary, so talented, so superb, at their art, that they scare the absolute mortal crap out of you when you find that one of them is "on you" as in on the air at the monster station across town and it's YOUR job not to lose the ratings war. Mike Wingfield is in my personal hall of fame as the scariest jocko I ever faced. Compared to him, every other ratings war was a cake walk. He was and is amazing.
When I left WCAW and WVAF-FM in Charleston, West Virginia to do afternoons at the famous WXIT-AM ( X-15 ), Paul Miles found Mike Wingfield and put him on me. We have been friends who tried a long time to kill each other. Mike is retired now, but worked at San Diego's KCBQ and the big ape WAPE in Jacksonville... we are both in the Mister Deejay Hall of Fame in Nashville...and Mike worked in the Nashville Market for a time as well.
Wingfield...has my total respect...a great guy...a monster talent...a skilled production talent as well. You don't face a jock like Wingfield and not either quit the business or get really good really fast. He is the Master teacher...that I have never met face to face, but we have become great friends through the years, through the magic of radio. I hope to meet him someday in person.
I have had many phone conversations with Mike, often while we were on the air trying to beat each other up. He is a blackbelt wordsmith and just amazing on the air. My most worthy opponent, and also my good friend. He is in my all time "Hall Of Fame", and I honor him here. Wingfield, a mentor I never met, a broadcaster without peer.
Recently he sent me this little production called "jock rot". Please enjoy it!
