WPAR was one HOT little radio station! I was the morning talent early 1970's
I had the extreme pleasure of being the morning personality on Parkersburg's legendary rock station, WPAR. It was a monster good radio station and how could it not be. I did mornings, John Potts did Midday, and Chuck Hussion did afternoons. How could that station NOT rock the planet? It was an incredible pleasure working there. People still talk about that radio station and how it was so beloved by the listeners.
WPAR was the flagship station of Grewe Broadcasting. The group owned seven stations, the maximum at that time. Famed broadcast consultant Jerry King of McVay Media was on the air at that time in the Moundsville, WV station. WPAR was an incredible station. Chuck Hussion was our afternoon talent and he wound up with a great career at Atlanta powerhouse, WSB. John Potts was our program director, and John had been my program director at Charleston's WCAW and WVAF-FM. John was my PD at WKYG later in our careers.
My success at WPAR led to me being the morning talent at another legendary station, the Rock of Altoona, WVAM. I replaced Jim Reese who had just left the market to join the big eight, CKLW. You may remember him as Mister Big Pipes, Grant Hudson on the big eight. Altoona produced so many stars including John Gehron, former talent and program director of WLS, Chicago. It was my extreme pleasure to work for Charlie Fagan, PD now retired VP of CBS.
To say I worked at some heavyweight stations, with some amazing radio personalities, was an exciting and humbling experience...what a rocket ride!
